The Netherlands

The American internet company, Google, is planning to buy all the electricity that is generated from the biggest solar park in the Netherlands, to supply power to a data center holding thousands of servers. Now that the price of solar power and wind power is as low as fossil fuel energy, Google has decided to power all its offices and data centers with renewable energy. The energy will supply the Eemshaven data center, which has been operating since 2016. Google has 3 other such centers in Europe.

Google's energy manager said the agreement with the energy supplier Eneco will be for "many months to come, maybe even years".

The Netherlands is planning to increase its production of renewable energy, and the government is putting 12 billion euros into developing wind farms located offshore.

South Korea

In an effort to reduce waste, Samsung has announced that it will recover components and various metals from recalled Galaxy Note 7 cellphones. The phones were recalled after they showed themselves to be a fire risk, as the batteries tend to catch fire. The components such as memory chips, display modules and camera models will reused or recycled. Also, almost 160 tons of metal (silver, gold, copper, cobalt) will be recovered. Samsung is one of the biggest smartphone manufacturers in the world.

USA

Colorado has decided to join the "climate alliance" of US states which will comply with the conditions of the Paris climate agreement. This means that Colorado will cut its greenhouse gas emissions by 26% by 2025. It will also decrease its carbon emissions from electricity production by 25%. The John Hickenlooper, the Colorado Governor said "Coloradans value clean air and clean water. Our strong economy is a reflection of how our exhilarating outdoors attracts young entrepreneurs and the talent they need for their businesses.. The vast majority of our residents, and indeed the country, expect us to help lead the way toward a clean and affordable energy future."

The climate alliance was formed by the Governors of California, New York and Washington State in June 2017, in order to lead the fight against global warming. Pam Kiely, the Environmental Defense Fund's senior director of regulatory strategy said "Today's announcement puts Colorado on the growing list of states in all parts of the nation that are stepping up to fill the vacuum left by President Trump's decision to pull the US out of the Paris climate accord".
